Cambridge is situated at the convergence of the Grand River. The city is located in Southern Ontario in the Waterloo Region and has an approximate population of 130,000 people. It was formed by the amalgamation of four distinct centres: Galt city, the Towns of Hespeler and Preston, and Blair. Each of these communities have a long history that comes with them.

What was originally a large block of land owned by Six Nations Indians, was purchased by a Scotsman named William Dickson in 1816. Almost a decade later, John Galt, the Canadian Company Commissioner, visited the area and the village was re-named as Galt in his honour.

By the 1830s the village grew rapidly and when the community was surveyed by William Scollick, he renamed the community after his hometown in England, Preston. Similarly, as communities began to develop, in 1858, Jacob Hespeler opened the first Post Office and the settlement was renamed from New Hope to the village of Hespeler. All of the communities together is what is represented as Cambridge city.

Today, the city offers a host of amenities to its residents and visitors that range from an exhilarating night at Dunfield Theatre, a state-of-the-art facility, to satisfying cravings at one of Canada’s top 20 hotels.

Cambridge has many attractions that both visitors and residents can explore and enjoy. You can take a tour of the Toyota Motor Manufacturing plant, or enjoy a slow drive through the game reserve at the African Lion Safari, or if you’re looking for something more mellow you can visit the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory where you can see thousands of free-flying butterflies.

The city is serviced by a well established network of provincial and regional highways. Because the city is located in the industrial heartland of Canada, the roads that serve as major highways in this city include Highways 401, 8, 24, and 97.
