Bolton is situated in Peel Region and is one of the most populous communities in Caledon. It is located about 50 km northwest of Toronto. The village was settled mainly due to the water power of Humber River.

What was once known as Bolton Mills, which is now Downtown Bolton (King St. & Queen St.) is where the village started. The village was named after George and James Bolton, who built the first water-powered grist mill in 1822 on Humber River. For the early settlers, the water power of rivers was the key contributor to any industrial development. Therefore, Bolton developed around the grist mill. Moreover, the Boltons were major contributors to the development of the village.

In 1842, James’ son had purchased the mill from George Bolton and added a sawmill and relocated the original mill to the north side of the river. Another son of James opened the first general store and post office. One of James’ grandsons, Lambert Bolton, had become the first reeve of the village in 1872. Because of their contributions, the family remained prominent members of the community.

Today, Bolton has a population of just under 30,000 and is the largest urban center of Caledon. It is an area where you will find the largest concentration of shops and restaurants. The area is located along the banks of Humber River, thus providing its visitors and residents a chance to shop or relax and enjoy a stroll along the River. Much of the northwest portions of the community is dominated by conservation lands. These areas create space for several recreational areas.

Downtown Bolton keeps its residents engaged by hosting many events throughout the year. The Bolton Farmers’ Market is a more popularly known event that takes place starting in June through October. Midnight Madness is another large festival that happens in August, where residents can enjoy music, local entertainment, vendors, and many activities especially for kids.
